As one of the oldest law firms in Lubbock and West Texas, McCleskey,
Harriger, Brazill & Graf, L.L.P. prides itself on its heritage and contributions
to this region. The Firm's founder, Garrett Hobert Nelson, became a practicing attorney
in 1927, and opened his first law office in Tahoka, Texas in 1928. He served two terms as
the Lynn County Attorney and two terms as the District Attorney of the 106th Judicial District.
He was also elected to the Texas Senate and served two terms as Senator of the 31st Senatorial
District. While practicing law in Tahoka, he became partners with Truett Smith in the law firm
of Nelson & Smith. The Nelson family moved to Lubbock in 1935 while Hobert was still in the
Texas Senate. The following year, he became partners with the former Judge of the 99th
District Court, Clark M. Mullican in 1936. In 1938, Senator Nelson made an unsuccessful
bid for Lieutenant Governor of Texas, losing to Coke Stevenson in the general election.
In the meantime, Judge Mullican left the Firm, and Senator Nelson began his partnership
with Franklin (Frank) D. Brown, under the name of Nelson & Brown in 1939.
In 1940, a newly practicing attorney named George W. McCleskey joined the Firm.
Mr. McCleskey was with the Firm for less than two years before he went on active
duty with the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served three and a half years.
In 1945, upon his return to Lubbock following the War, he rejoined his old Firm as a
new partner under the name of Nelson, Brown & McCleskey. Afterwards, in 1946, upon Mr.
Brown's retirement, the Firm's name was changed to Nelson & McCleskey. For a short
time from 1946 to 1947, Robert (Bob) Howard was associated with the Firm under the name
of Nelson, McCleskey & Howard. After Mr. Howard left, the Firm name returned to Nelson & McCleskey
from 1947 to 1952.
In the early 1950's, Frank Brown came out of retirement and rejoined the Firm under the name of Nelson,
McCleskey & Brown. In 1952, Mr. Brown's son, Sam E. Brown, became associated with the Firm.
When Mr. Brown and his son left in 1953, the Firm name returned to Nelson & McCleskey. A newly practicing
attorney from Pennsylvania, Harold O. Harriger, joined the Firm in 1955, and the Firm name was again changed
in 1958 to Nelson, McCleskey & Harriger.

In 1971, the Firm's name was changed to reflect Clarence Brazill as a named partner under the name

Nelson, Don Graf was added as a named partner, and the Firm adopted its present name, McCleskey,
Harriger, Brazill & Graf, L.L.P.
From its humble beginnings 75 years ago, McCleskey,
